Nicola-Matteo Munari
Founder of MunariDesign, Nicola-Matteo Munari is a designer specialised in the fields of visual identity coordination and editorial design, enjoying an international reputation thanks to his dedication to quality and his commitment to the cultural promotion of design.
Once graduated in Graphic Design from the Art Lyceum, he was apprenticed in wood sculpture and exhibited as an artist, also experimenting with painting and photography.
He started studying Architecture of Buildings at the Milan Politecnico University and then enrolled in the Scuola Politecnica di Design (SPD), where he graduated with a Master in Visual Design.
Since 2010 he has worked as an independent designer and consultant producing an extended body of work across all scales and disciplines of communication design, including corporate identity, brand architecture, editorial design, packaging, art direction, photography, type design, signage, environmental graphics, digital design, web development, naming, strategy and copywriting.
From 2012 to 2015 he collaborated with Italian graphic design master Italo Lupi, coordinating the museum graphics of Milan’s Cathedral Museum and the identity of the Triennale Design Museum’s 7th edition, whose catalogue received the Honorable Mention from the Compasso d’Oro award.
In 2015 he established MunariDesign in his birthplace, Piacenza, a historical crossway right in the middle of Northern Italy, developing projects for important companies such as Moto Guzzi, Pirelli, Auditel, the Zurich Center of Finance and Insurance, Ferrari, Madonna di Campiglio, Molteni Group, Naturgy, Edison, Flash Art, Moleskine and others.
Since 2020 he acts as consultant design director in charge of the corporate identity of UniFor—an international leader in the field of high-end office furniture and workspace environment—designing and coordinating all the company’s visual communication. In 2022 he was appointed the same role also by Citterio, a company operating in the fields of partition systems and office design.
In addition to the professional practice, he constantly dedicates himself to the cultural promotion of design. In 2013 he founded Designculture, a website where he publishes essays and interviews with leading designers from around the world. While in 2015 he founded the Archivio Grafica Italiana, the first online archive dedicated to the entire Italian graphic design heritage.
Since 2020 he is a member of the Italian Association of Design Historians (AIS/Design). Since 2014 he is contributor to PreText, a bibliophile periodical published by the Lombardy Institute of Contemporary History (ILSC), and has also been advisor and contributor to Gute Process, an online magazine dedicated to graphic design culture.
In 2022 he has been selected as a “case of excellence” by the curatorial committee of the Atlas of Creative and Cultural Enterprises issued by the Treccani Institute of the Italian Encyclopedia.
Internationally appreciated as a design scholar and considered to be one of the leading experts in the history of Italian graphic design, since 2012 he has been giving lectures and workshops to art schools, universities and design institutes including the Milan Politecnico University, SCAD of Hong Kong, LABA of Brescia, Art Lyceum of Piacenza, University of New Haven and the School of Visual Arts (SVA) of New York.
